Keynote: Realizing 5G’s Full Potential with the Wireless Edge Transformation
With the world moving toward a 5G rollout in 2019, a critical element for society to maximize 5G’s potential is intelligence at the wireless edge. To realize 5G’s full potential, intelligence must be distributed at the edge of the 5G wireless network, as well as on-device intelligence for smartphones, cars, and all other connected ‘things’ so they can perceive, reason and act on their own. 5G is a powerful platform for future services, and Qualcomm is inventing technologies critical to bringing its benefits and promise to fruition. These innovations include those in edge intelligence, AI, XR, sensing, processing and security that play a critical role in fueling the 5G ecosystem expansion and realizing the full potential of 5G as a canvas for galvanizing these powerful technologies into services that will shape the future. And the benefits for consumers will be plenty, ranging from driver safety, virtual assistants, superior photography, enhanced security, cameras with privacy, health care applications, intuitive robotics and more.

Dr. John Smee, Qualcomm’s VP of Engineering, will discuss Qualcomm’s vision on the importance of wireless edge transformation and how industry can realize 5G’s full potential by combining critical technologies and working with the broader ecosystem to deliver a new world of intelligent devices. John can also share specific examples of how this new, decentralized paradigm can transform industries and bring enhanced user experiences, privacy, personalization and entirely new use cases.

Crossing the Coverage Divide
Although networks are reaching 1 Gbps speeds in dense, urban areas, the same cannot be said for rural and other hard-to-reach locations. Indeed, even in the age of 5G there are some Americans who struggle with slow or unreliable wireless connections – or even no connections at all. But that situation may soon change thanks to improved deployments of existing network technologies as well as new network deployment approaches involving everything from satellites to drones to balloons. Will the wireless industry soon cross the coverage divide?

IBW, 3.5 GHz, CBRS and Network Sharing Business Models: How Will It All Fit Together?
All eyes are on the 3.5 GHz band as it makes its way to the market. The band offers both licensed and unlicensed options via a spectrum-sharing architecture, and it could pave the way for new and unique business models for both wireless carriers and new market entrants. Not surprisingly, questions remain: Will LTE successfully be deployed in licensed and unlicensed scenarios? Will stadiums and other venues leverage 3.5 GHz for their own private LTE networks? How will commercial buildings be factored in? And how might this affect legacy networks and business models?
